New Skilled Residency Pathways Coming in 2026

Back to News Hub

Starting mid-2026, the New Zealand Government will roll out two new residence pathways designed to help businesses retain skilled workers and offer migrants a more streamlined route to permanent residency.

At Jobcorp NZ we understand how vital skilled migrants are to the success of Kiwi businesses. If you're currently employing migrant staff, our licensed immigration advisers can help assess their future eligibility under these upcoming changes.

Skilled Work Experience Pathway

This option is tailored for individuals who have already demonstrated their value in New Zealand's workforce.

Key requirements:

  • A minimum of five years of relevant skilled work experience.

  • At least two years of that experience must be in New Zealand.

  • New Zealand-based work must be paid at 1.1 times the median wage or higher.Trades and Technician Pathway

This pathway supports migrants working in specific trades and technical roles, especially where hands-on skills and vocational training are essential.

Key requirements:

  • A Level 4 qualification or higher. (A National Trade Certificate that is equivalent to NZQF 4 is the minimum requirement)

  • At least four years of experience after qualifying.

  • A minimum of 18 months working in New Zealand, earning at or above the median wage.

  • Additional criteria may apply depending on the occupation, and a full list of eligible roles will be released closer to the launch.
