Dependent Children: Work Rights After School

Back to News Hub

Good news for families with dependent children on student visas.

Children in Years 12 or 13 have long been able to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during school holidays. We've now received confirmation that these work rights can continue after your child leaves school, for the duration of the supporting parent's visa.

 Key Points:
  • Your child can continue working while they remain primarily dependent on you

  • Work rights continue until your residence application is approved

  • Important: You must apply for this visa variation while your child is still at school

If your child has finished school and you're waiting for residence approval, they may be eligible to continue working under these provisions.
