September New Vehicle Registrations Defy Gravity

David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association says

The new vehicle market continues to flout general economic indicators with sales in September up 5% on September 2014 and delivering a steady 5% growth for the year to date. New registrations of 12,474 vehicles is the largest month of September on record.

Total new vehicle registrations for September are up 5 percent (12,474 vehicles) on September 2014. Toyota remained the overall market leader for the month of September with 19 percent market share (2,318 vehicles) followed by Ford with 12 percent (1,449 vehicles) and Holden with 11 percent market share (1,402 vehicles). Year to date Toyota, Holden, Ford, Mazda, and Hyundai respectively remain the top five overall market leaders.

New passenger car registrations of 8,835 vehicles in September were up 453 units (5.4 percent) on September 2014 sales of 8,382 vehicles and was the strongest month of September since 1987. Toyota remains the market leader for passenger vehicles with 17 percent market share (1,471 vehicles) followed by Holden with 12 percent (1068 vehicles) and Mazda with 10 percent market share (891 vehicles). Year to date, Toyota, Holden, and Mazda remain the passenger vehicle market leaders. The Toyota Corolla was the top-selling passenger model for the month of September (687 vehicles) followed by the Holden Commodore (362 vehicles) and the Mazda3 (244 vehicles).

New commercial vehicle registrations of 3,639 vehicles in September were up 181 vehicles (5.2 percent) compared to September 2014 and 1,752 units a year to date (6.3 percent). Toyota was the commercial vehicle leader for the month of September with 23 percent market share (847 vehicles), followed by Ford also with 23 percent (831 vehicles) and Holden with 9 percent market share (334 vehicles).

The Ford Ranger remained the monthly top-selling commercial vehicle model with 743 vehicles registered, followed by the Toyota Hilux with 589 vehicles and Holden Colorado with 320 vehicles. Year to date the Ford Ranger remains the top-selling commercial vehicle model with 17 percent market share (4,967 vehicles) followed by the Hilux with 14 percent (4,158 vehicles) and the Holden Colorado with 9 percent market share (2,711 vehicles).

The Ford Ranger is the top model overall for the month of September with 743 vehicles followed by the Toyota Corolla with 687 vehicles and the Toyota Hilux with 589 vehicles. They are also the top three models year to date, however, the Hilux remains above the Corolla.

The sales of sports utility vehicles remain the dominant vehicle segment with a 33 percent market share for the month of September and 33 percent year to date. The Pick-up/Chassis Cab segment was the second strongest segment with 20 percent for the month of September and 21 percent market share year to date. The small passenger vehicle segment was the third biggest segment on 14 percent market share for the month of September and 14 percent year to date.

​“If registrations of new vehicles continue at the pace it has done for the first 9 months of the year, the industry will easily break the 130,000 unit barrier in 2015 for the first time ever,” said Mr Crawford.
