David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association says “registrations of 11,840 new vehicles for the month of September is the strongest September result since the MIA started collecting records in 1975.  It reflects continued strong demand and surprisingly suggests purchases of new vehicles were unimpeded by the election during September”.

September sales of 3,458 new commercial vehicles were also the strongest September on record while 8,382 new passenger vehicles for the month was the strongest September result since 1986.  Year to date, registrations of new commercial vehicles are 4,907 units (21.5%) above this time 2013.  Registrations of passenger vehicles a year to date are 6,218 units (10.3%) above this time in 2013.

Passenger vehicles registrations of 8,382 units during September, were up 1,110 Units (15.3%) on September 2013. Commercial vehicle registrations of 3,458 were up 659 units (23.5%) on September 2013. Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of September with 20% market share (2,321 units) with Holden second on 11% (1,349 units) and Ford third with 10% (1,151 units).

The Toyota Corolla was the top selling new vehicle model in September with 629 new registrations, followed by the Ford Ranger with 595, the Toyota Hilux in 3rdwith 526 registrations. Toyota remains the passenger car market leader for the month of September with 19% share (1,582 units), with Holden second on 12% (1,044 units) and Mazda third with 8% (671 units). Toyota was also the commercial vehicle market leader with a 21% share (739 units) followed by Ford at 19% (672 units) and Holden third at 9% (305 units).

The Toyota Corolla was once again the top-selling passenger model with 8% market share (629 units), followed by the Toyota Yaris on 4% (373 units) and the Holden Commodore on 3% (277 units). The Ford Ranger retained its position as the monthly top selling commercial model for September with 595 units sold (17% market share). The Toyota Hilux was the second best seller with 15% market share (526 units).  This was followed by the Holden Colorado at 8% (280 units).  Year to date the Ford Ranger has retained the lead as the top selling commercial model with 16% market share (4,435 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux, with 15% market share (4,264 units).

The sale of sports utility vehicles continues to be the strongest selling segment with 28% of all vehicles sales in September, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs with 19% and small passenger cars at 16%. “Healthy economic confidence combined with competitive pricing is fuelling strong demand for new vehicles.  If sales keep at this level it could over 124,000 new registrations for 2014, exceeding the previous best year of 123,247 new registrations in 1984” says Mr. Crawford.
