New Vehicle Market Remains Buoyant

David Crawford, Chief Executive Officer of the Motor Industry Association said “Despite Easter, ANZAC day and school holidays, new vehicle registrations for April 2014 remain strong with 8,729 new registrations during the month, up 7% on April 2013, and was the strongest April since 1982.  Year to date the market is 13%(4,746 units), ahead of this time in 2013”.

There were 6,151 passenger vehicles sold during April, up 4% (243 units) on April 2013. Year to date registrations of passenger vehicles is 12% (3,119 units) ahead of 2013.

Commercial vehicle registrations of 2,578 units were up 15% (343 units) on April 2013.  Year to date registrations of commercial vehicles is 18% (1,628 units) ahead of April 2013, reflecting a continued strong market for commercial vehicles.

Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of April with 16% market share (1,384 units) with Ford second on 11% (985 units) and Holden third with 10% (915 units).

Toyota was the passenger car market leader for the month of April with 12% share (765 units), with Holden second on 11% (662 units) and Hyundai third with 9% (571 units).

The Toyota Corolla remains the top-selling passenger model with 5% market share (298 units), followed by the Nissan X-Trail on 4% (238 units) and the Holden Commodore also at 4% (217 units).

The Ford Ranger was the top selling commercial model for April with 513 units sold (20% market share). The Toyota Hilux was the second best seller with 15% market share (377 units).  This was followed by the Holden Colorado with 9% (231 units).  Year to date the Ford Ranger is the top selling commercial model with 16% market share (1,684 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux, with 14% market share (1,503 units), 181 fewer than the Ford Ranger.

​The sale of sports utility vehicles grew to 30% of all vehicles sales in April, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs with 21% and small passenger cars at 19% each.
