This is an exceptional opportunity to join a specialist marine engineering company based in Whangārei, delivering mechanical repairs, precision machining, and refit solutions to high-speed diesel superyachts and high-end recreational vessels.

About the role
You will be working as a Marine Diesel Fitter and Turner, carrying out precision fitting, machining, alignment, and mechanical installation work on high-performance superyachts.
 
This is a hands-on role requiring a high level of accuracy, problem-solving ability, and pride in workmanship.
 
Key duties will include:
  • Shaft alignment and drivetrain setup, including use of laser alignment equipment
  • Removal, installation, and alignment of propeller shafts, couplings, and gearboxes
  • Machining of critical components such as engine mounts, flanges, sleeves, and adaptors
  • Assisting with engine removals, installations, and repower projects
  • Line boring, flange facing, and on-site machining as required
  • Installation and replacement of cutless bearings, stern tubes, and shaft seals
  • Fabrication and modification of mounts, brackets, and structural supports
  • Precision fitting and assembly of mechanical components to tight tolerances
  • Maintenance and overhaul of deck machinery (winches, cranes, passerelles)
  • Working on hydraulic components, including pumps, cylinders, and associated systems
  • Measuring and checking tolerances using micrometers, dial indicators, and precision tools
  • Supporting commissioning, sea trials, and vibration analysis
  • Carrying out general mechanical repairs and preventative maintenance

Skills sought
You must hold a relevant engineering or mechanical trade qualification, ideally as a Fitter and Turner, with experience in marine or high-spec engineering environments.
  • Proven experience in precision fitting and machining
  • Marine experience is highly advantageous, particularly within the recreational or superyacht sector
  • Strong background in alignment work (shafts, engines, gearboxes)
  • Experience with manual machining equipment and on-site machining tools
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances with a high level of accuracy
  • Strong problem-solving ability and adaptability in complex environments
  • A strong focus on cleanliness, organisation, and pristine workmanship
  • Professional attitude and ability to work within high-value client environments
