Securing Executive Employment in New Zealand, Australia and International locations

The New Zealand market for management vacancies like many countries has gone global. New Zealand based companies are accepting international applications and New Zealand executives are more open to opportunities offshore.

Management level vacancies are secured a number of ways however internal promotions, head hunting and hiring relationships only make up an estimated one third of executive hires.

The vast majority of Key Appointment vacancies come about in a well-planned structured manner, just like the companies you will want to work for.

The recruiter will be seeking to build a depth of talent from a candidate pool, advertising, searching for candidates and consequently will look closely at resumes; we have therefore provided numerous tips with this in mind.

  • How to build an executive resume compatible with CRM
  • Social networking and its place in executive recruitment
  • Registering for executive alerts
  • International opportunities
  • Understanding the process

Building an executive resume:

The resume should be broken up into a few sections.

  1. Contact page; this should include name, business, home and mobile phone numbers, email address, education, qualifications and interests. A head and shoulders business photo with suit and tie is essential for executive appointments.

  2. Summary Employment Page: summarise all your employment with a brief description of your employment. Copy and paste the logo and web address of past employers, this provides authenticity, interaction and colour, your resume will stand out.

  3. Detailed Employment Pages: while the summary page is useful to the recruiter, if interested, the recruiter will seek additional information. The detail in this section should include as many brand names and job titles you have genuinely been involved in, consider the following:

Think about how Google search works, CRM systems often use similar technology. As an example, if the recruiter was seeking a Dealer Principal clearly the recruiter will use this search string and any brand experience they may be seeking: e.g. BMW, Audi, Ford, Toyota etc.

While it is important to have detail in your resume the presentation is critical. Correct spelling and grammar is also required at this level.

  4. Scan major qualifications and add to the end of the resume. This information is useful for the recruiter; it will also make your resume look professional.

  5. Ensure the server you are sending the application too will take the size file you are sending, if it does not, the hiring manager will not receive your resume. Most corporate servers are set at 1 meg.

  6. Send your resume in PDF format to an executive vacancy. Many P.C's have word document viewing set differently than how you see the same document so you cannot guarantee correct formatting. PDF's ensures consistency.

  7. The executive recruiter will search content in your resume via the CRM system. Using online document shortage systems with links to content headings may mean your resume is missed in the CRM key word search functionality. Take the safe route and send your resume via PDF.

  8. When applying for vacancies ensure you use the same email address both with the original application and all follow up emails to the hiring manager/consultant. Virtually all key appointment recruiters' use advanced CRM technology, using the same email address ensures your correspondence ends up in the file that is applicable to your application.

Business networking and social media.

Understanding the process

Those seeking employment in the management sector may enhance their ability to secure employment by understanding the structured recruitment processes many companies now use. It can be a frustrating experience trying to secure these roles as the assignments can sometimes takes weeks if not months. Securing the top jobs the motor industry has to offer is a journey of understanding and only one candidate is usually successful for each assignment, persistence pays but so does an understanding of the process.

Give some thought to how Automotive Employment NZ may structure the assignment you are applying for, take note of both the commencement and closing date of executives roles managed by us.
