Wage and Salary rates as at May 2011.
Since our last survey there continues to be increase's
in wage rates for many of the categories listed below.
Please note: as Automotive Employment NZ Ltd is involved with new
hires, these rates are for new hires not existing employees.
We have attempted to be as accurate as possible and to provide guidelines
for the most popular sectors of the New Zealand motor industry but
take no responsibility for the accuracy of the information. Any
hiring decision should be based on a range of knowledge from a variety
of sources.
Please check the date the last salary review was completed
as salary rates obviously change over a period of time.
It is possible our opinion will differ from other
independent surveys however the information is based on actual hires
occurring through Automotive Employment NZ Ltd. All rates assume
experience in a specific fields of expertise and where applicable
the relevant industry qualifications.
Employees should note that while these rates may provide
a guide, to gain an accurate indication of rates you may need to
consider how your skills and experience compare to others in the
work place. Your work performance, stability of overall employment,
knowledge of product, development of your skills and or qualifications,
personal grooming, communication skills and the length of service
you have extended to your current employer may all impact on potential
earnings. These aspects of your employment should also be weighed
against the economic conditions prevailing in the location you work
or intend to move to.
Aftermarket Counter
Sales Light Automotive
Median $43,000 PA
These roles are with parts companies that sell non-original
equipment parts and accessories. The positions require specific
retail parts experience in a comparable market. Rates commence at
$35,000 for a junior parts person through to $47000 in aftermarket
parts operations with $40,000 being a common commencing rate. As
with all the following rates these are commencing incomes for new
hires based on actual placements made recently.
Franchise Parts Interpreters
Median $47,000
These roles are with the retail outlets for authorised
franchise motor vehicle dealerships. The roles usually pay around
$42,000 through to $60,000.
Heavy Transport Parts
Interpreters
Median $57,000
Disparities in wage rates exist between the automotive
and heavy automotive pay rates in the parts sector here in New Zealand.
Heavy parts interpreters can expect to earn from $48000 to $67,000.
The top rates can be hard to come by, particularly so in areas with
lower population demographics.
Concerning shortages of skills are now being reported
in this area.
After Market Parts Rep
Light Automotive
Median $50,000
These roles are with parts companies that sell non-original
equipment parts and accessories. The range commences at $42000 to
$70,000. A company car, usually a station wagon is provided. It
is noted companies focused on specific brands or products tend to
be the employers remunerating toward to the top end of these rates
Franchise Parts Rep
Median $55,000
These roles are with the retail outlets for Authorised
light automotive franchise sites. The roles usually pay around $45,000
to $60,000 with a company car.
Heavy Transport/Heavy
Equipment Parts Rep
Median $58,000
These roles are generally paying between $50,000 and
$70,000 with a company car.
Purchasing staff
Median $70,000
Whilst very hard to secure these roles in New Zealand,
the leaders in the aftermarket parts sector pay between $55,000
and $100,000.
Product Managers, Product
Reps
Median $69,000
These roles are generally paid $55,000 to $85,000.
Commonly these roles are in the industries supplying to motor trade
such as oil products, batteries and similar products but also surface
in companies wishing to have brand representation. Without exception
the roles include a company car. The higher end of the scale ordinarily
acknowledges a degree of specific technical expertise such as a
brake code certifier or similar.
Parts Managers Aftermarket
Parrts
Median $60,000
These roles pay between $45,000 and $110,000
dependant on the size and volume of the operation. The higher rates
are in the cities and most noticeably Auckland. Vacancies at the
upper end are hard to secure and normally paid to a parts manager
who has "hub responsibilities" i.e. multiple branches
or after sales responsibilities. Franchise sites normally pay around
$65 to 85,000 for a Parts Manager supervising 8 or less staff. The
non-franchise after market companies may pay as little as $45,000
to as much as $90,000. Once again this is dependent on the size
of the team and location of the site.
Parts Managers Franchise Automotive
Median rate $85000
Parts managers working from light automotive
franchise vehicle dealerships are presently earning between $60'000
and $120'000. The lower rates are usually paid to managers who have
few staff responsibilities while the upper range is paid to parts
managers main flagship sites who have considerable staffing responsibilities.
Parts Managers Heavy Diesel
Median rate $85000
Parts managers working from heavy diesel sites
are presently earning between $75,000 and $120'000. The lower rates
are usually paid to managers who have few staff responsibilities
while the upper range is paid to parts managers main flagship sites
who have considerable staffing responsibilities.
